Choosing a Wedding Photographer: What You Really Need to Know
Let’s be honest – picking your wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make for the day. After all, they’ll be there for some of your most intimate, joy-filled moments, and they’ll be the one capturing it all for you to relive for years to come. But how do you know if a photographer is the right fit for you? Let me give you a little insight into how I approach things and what you can expect from me on your big day.
How do I approach photographing a wedding?
I’m not one to boss people around or force you into stiff poses. My style is all about capturing what naturally unfolds throughout the day. I want you to feel relaxed and like yourselves, so I won’t be overly directive. My goal is for you to just enjoy the moment, and I’ll document everything as it happens.
Will it feel awkward having me around?
It might feel a bit awkward at first, but trust me, after those initial few moments, you’ll be so wrapped up in the excitement of your day – your new husband or wife, your guests, the buzzing atmosphere – that you’ll probably forget I’m even there! I’m good at blending in, so before you know it, you’ll be having fun, and the photos will just happen naturally.
Will you like having me at your wedding?
I hope so! I’ve been told that my calm, friendly presence makes people feel at ease, and that’s exactly what I aim for. I’ll get stuck in with your guests, blend in when needed, but also know when to step back. Weddings can be emotional, and I totally understand that sometimes, the last thing you want is a camera in your face during those tender moments. I’m good at reading the room and capturing everything with sensitivity – whether it’s the humour or the raw emotions of the day.
Do we have anything in common?
If you’re someone who loves a good party but also appreciates a bit of time to yourself, we’ll probably get on! I’d call myself an “introverted extrovert” – I can dive into the action and capture all the fun, but I’m equally happy with a bit of quiet to recharge. When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me spending time with friends, exploring the outdoors with my family, camping, going to festivals and wild swimming.
Can I help you plan your wedding?
Weddings can be a lot, and I’ve been to more than I can count over the years. I’m happy to share my knowledge, whether you need advice on the timeline, how long to set aside for different parts of the day, or ideas for a festival-style wedding. I’ve picked up a lot along the way and I’m more than happy to chat through anything you need help with. You can also check out my blog for more tips and advice!
Have I shot at your venue?
Chances are, I probably have! I’ve worked at some of the most beautiful venues in Somerset, from well-known spots to private family gardens. If you’d like to see my work in a specific setting or venue, just ask – I’d be happy to share examples that might give you some inspiration.
What makes me stand out?
I know there are so many photographers out there, and it can feel overwhelming choosing one. But here’s what I can promise you: I believe that chemistry is everything. It’s so important that you feel comfortable with your photographer – after all, I’ll be with you throughout the whole day! Hopefully, my portfolio speaks for itself in terms of visuals, but as a person, you’ll get a calm, smiley, and approachable presence.
I’m great at chatting with parents, making friends with your bridesmaids, and even getting stuck in on the dance floor to capture those party shots! With 20 years of photography experience, I know what to expect and how to handle any surprises or changes that might come up. You can trust me to go with the flow and keep things smooth and stress-free.
How do you book?
I always like to start with a Zoom call. It’s really important that we feel like we click – and if for some reason we don’t, no hard feelings! But if we hit it off, then great! From there, I’ll send over my booking form and a link for the £400 deposit to secure your date.
When will you get your photos?
I know how exciting it is to see your wedding photos, so I always send a sneak peek within a week after your wedding. You can expect the full gallery to be ready within 2 to 6 weeks, depending on my schedule. That way, you can relive your day without waiting too long.
Are your photos safe?
Absolutely. I always shoot on two SD cards, so your photos are backed up in real-time on the day. Once I’m back in my office, I have a 3-part backup system to ensure everything is safely archived. I keep the wedding archives forever, but your online gallery will expire after two years. I recommend you also back up your photos on your own system.
What’s my emergency plan?
Since COVID, I get asked this a lot – and it’s a fair question! In case of an emergency where I can’t make it, I have a trusted network of local photographers who I’d call on to step in. I’d make sure you’re happy with them first, of course! They’d shoot the wedding, and I’d still edit the photos to ensure you get the same editing style you booked me for. If I’m unable to do the editing, I’d brief the backup photographer to keep everything consistent.
Do you need to feed me?
Yes, please! It’s a long day, and a warm meal keeps me going. I’m happy to eat with your guests or in a back room – whatever works best for you. Just a heads-up: I’m vegetarian.
Do I offer albums and prints?
Definitely! I have a print shop linked to your gallery where you can order prints, albums, thank-you cards, and more. I’m a big believer in printing your favourite photos – there’s something so special about holding those memories in your hands. I’d love to help you create a beautiful album or wall art from your wedding.
